In Germany, 220,000 households are damaged by fire every year, 14,000 of them at Christmas time. Most of the fires break out in the kitchen through self-ignition of heated oil and fat (Caution: never extinguish with water!). Electrical devices are also among the most frequent causes of fire. Children playing with matches, candles and fireworks also cause fires, especially when the parents are not present.
